Vaxholm

A young girl eating ice-cream in the harbour of the picturesque city Vaxholm.

Happy? What is happiness? I have come to the conclusion that water is a big part of my happiness. Maybe because I am brought up in a city in the north of Sweden where this element is very present. Maybe because of its cleansing nature? Surrounded by harbours and rippling H2O I could think more clearly when walking through the city; often filled with heartaches. I´ve always loved freedom and I think the ocean simplifies the search for a sense of what that is.

All since the 1500s Vaxholm - outside of the capitol Stockholm in Sweden - has been the archipelago’s central place. This is my current hometown.

Maybe the most known building in Vaxholm is the great stronghold. The stronghold’s biggest test was an attack by the Russians in 1719. The fortress was then in so good shape that the Russians were fought off and after that they never tried to capture Stockholm again. Vaxholm stronghold has also been used as a prison for many famous criminals such as the general Georg Carl von Döbeln and the thief Jacob Guntlack.

Vaxholm could only be reached with private boats before. In the early 1900s public boats started to go out to Vaxholm from Stockholm and in 1926 the Pålsund Bridge was built so Vaxholm could be reached through cars.
